Homonyms


Homonyms
They are words that are identical in spelling and/or pronunciation but have different meanings.


Rain-water drops falling from clouds
It was raining outside.
Reign-to rule over
The king will reign over his people.
Rein-straps attached to an animal’s bridle
He tugged on the horse’s reins to slow him down.

Sent-directed or forced something to go
I sent the package to Barbara.
Cent-one penny coin
My mom paid ten cents for the gum.
Scent-an odor
There was an awful scent in the air. 

Ant-an insect
The ant was crawling on the food.
Aunt-the sister of one’s father or mother
I went to my aunt’s house for supper. 

Deer-a mammal
The deer was grazing in the meadow.
Dear-beloved or precious
My mom is very dear to me.




Turn-to rotate
We had to turn the wheel sharply to avoid the accident.
Tern-a sea bird related to gulls
How fast can a tern fly?

Pause-to make a brief stop
I had to pause and catch my breath.
Paws-an animal’s feet
My dog’s paws were very muddy.
